Overview
Taurolidine citrate + heparin is a fixed-dose combination catheter lock solution used to reduce the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) in adults with kidney failure receiving long-term hemodialysis through a central venous catheter. The formulation typically contains taurolidine (an antimicrobial agent), sodium citrate (an anticoagulant and calcium chelator), and heparin (an anticoagulant). Taurolidine acts by disrupting bacterial cell walls, neutralizing endotoxins, and preventing biofilm formation within catheters. Heparin prevents clot formation within the catheter lumen, while citrate enhances both antimicrobial activity and anticoagulation. This combination has demonstrated significant reductions in CRBSI rates compared to standard heparin locks, with a comparable safety profile[1][3][5][6][7][9].
