5-MOMIPP (3-(5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-1-(4-pyridinyl)-2-propene-1-one) is a synthetic indole-based chalcone belonging to the indolyl-pyridinyl-propenone class. Developed by researchers at the University of Toledo, it is a prototypical inducer of methuosis, a novel form of caspase-independent, non-apoptotic cell death. This mechanism involves the massive vacuolization of macropinosome and endosome compartments, leading to metabolic catastrophe and cell rupture. 5-MOMIPP has demonstrated cytotoxic activity in glioblastoma and other cancer cell lines. It is often used as a reference compound in structure-activity relationship studies, such as those that identified its analog 6-MOMIPP, which possesses a distinct mechanism of action involving microtubule disruption.
