Overview

Aflibercept + triamcinolone acetonide is a combination therapy used primarily in ophthalmology for the treatment of retinal vascular diseases, most notably diabetic macular edema (DME) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Aflibercept is a recombinant fusion protein that acts as a decoy receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), thereby inhibiting VEGF-mediated angiogenesis and vascular permeability. Triamcinolone acetonide is a synthetic corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties, reducing inflammation by suppressing multiple inflammatory cytokines. The combination aims to leverage both anti-VEGF and anti-inflammatory mechanisms to achieve greater reduction in macular edema, improved visual acuity, and decreased treatment burden compared to monotherapy. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can more effectively reduce central macular thickness, decrease inflammatory cytokine levels (such as IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1), and improve short-term visual outcomes in DME patients without increasing safety risks.
