Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination antibiotic therapy consisting of ciprofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone) and clarithromycin (a macrolide). This combination has demonstrated synergistic antimicrobial effects, particularly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. In vitro studies have shown that while neither antibiotic alone could completely eradicate biofilm-ensconced bacteria, the combination at high concentrations was able to entirely eliminate P. aeruginosa biofilms. This makes it a potential therapeutic option for chronic pulmonary infections, especially in cystic fibrosis patients where P. aeruginosa is a major cause of mortality.
