Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citalopram + fingolimod is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used in clinical research for patients with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) who also suffer from mild-to-moderate depression. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake, thereby improving mood and alleviating depressive symptoms. Fingolimod is an immunomodulatory small molecule that acts as a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator, sequestering lymphocytes in lymph nodes and reducing their migration into the central nervous system, which helps control MS disease activity. The combination has been studied to assess safety, tolerability, and effects on quality of life, fatigue, disability, and depression in RRMS patients with comorbid depression[1][4][6]. No new or unexpected safety signals were observed compared to previous studies of either drug alone; however, there are significant potential drug interactions requiring careful monitoring due to additive risks such as central nervous system depression and cardiac effects[2][5].
