Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and sulfasalazine. LMWH is an anticoagulant derived from unfractionated heparin, used primarily to prevent and treat thromboembolic disorders by inhibiting clotting factors, especially factor Xa. Sulfasalazine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial properties; it acts mainly by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis via cyclooxygenase inhibition and suppressing various immune cell functions. This combination has been studied for the treatment of corticosteroid-resistant ulcerative colitis, where it demonstrated high rates of clinical remission[1][4]. The rationale for combining these agents lies in their complementary mechanisms—anti-inflammatory effects from sulfasalazine and potential improvement in mucosal microcirculation or reduction in microthrombosis from LMWH.
