Overview

A combination therapy consisting of drotrecogin alfa (recombinant activated human protein C) and prophylactic heparin. Drotrecogin alfa works through three main mechanisms: anticoagulant (inhibiting coagulation Factors Va and VIIIa), anti-inflammatory (indirect TNF-α inhibition), and pro-fibrinolytic (inhibition of plasminogen activator inhibitor). Heparin is administered prophylactically to prevent venous thromboembolic events during drotrecogin alfa treatment. This combination was studied in patients with severe sepsis.
