Overview
Seurat Therapeutics is developing an intranasal formulation of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) for the treatment and prevention of neurological disorders, including migraine, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and epilepsy. Spun out of research from the University of Chicago, the therapy utilizes the neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties of IGF-1. By delivering the protein intranasally, the drug is designed to bypass the blood-brain barrier and reach the central nervous system directly, thereby avoiding systemic side effects such as hypoglycemia that are associated with systemic IGF-1 administration. The mechanism of action involves the activation of the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R), which leads to a reduction in oxidative stress and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels within the trigeminal system, effectively inhibiting the pain pathways associated with migraine and other chronic pain conditions.
